Child in critical condition after near drowning in Stouffville

A 21-month-old child is in critical condition after he was found in a Stouffville pool.

Emergency crews were called to a home with a pool that was under construction just before 5:30 p.m. Monday. Police say the boy was found in the water that had collected in the pool.

“A brand new pool is being installed and it appears that the child somehow got into the water of the pool,” Duty Insp. Gary Miner told CityNews.

The child was transported to a local hospital and then moved to the Hospital for Sick Children.

“The child has hypothermia but does have a heartbeat and does have a pulse and is breathing,” said Miner. “Everything that can be done for the child is being done.”

Police say the child’s parents and siblings were home at the time of the incident.

Foul play is not suspected.

The name of the child is not being released at this time.
