Alleged robber injured in downtown hit-and-run

A bizarre chain of events on Saturday evening in the downtown core saw an alleged robber struck by a car while trying to flee the scene of the crime.

According to officials, around 5:30 p.m. a man allegedly tried to steal from a sporting goods shop in the downtown core. The man was grabbed by store security, but managed to break free and run out of the building.

As he attempted to flee the man was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Young and Queen streets.

Police say the car then fled the scene.

However, authorities were able to catch up with the vehicle at Yonge and Front streets. Both the driver and the passenger were then arrested after officers found what appeared to be marijuana in the vehicle. The driver was also given a breathalyzer test on scene.

The alleged thief meantime was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be okay.
