Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley hospitalized for alcohol abuse

Toronto-born musician Deryck Whibley has sworn off alcohol after spending a month in hospital for a drinking-related illness.

In a note on his personal website titled Rock Bottom, the 34-year-old front man for the Ajax pop-punk band Sum 41 told his fans he had been admitted to an intensive care unit after his liver and kidneys “collapsed.”

“The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I’ve been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day,” Whibley wrote.

“If I have one drink the doc’s say I will die.”

Whibley also posted graphic photographs from his hospital stay in hopes his experience will have others thinking twice about their own drinking.

“I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. I didn’t, and look where that got me.”

Whibley said he has quit drinking and plans to start working on an album and touring again soon.

He still plays with Sum 41 and is the longest-serving member.

The band formed in 1996 and had international success with their 2001 album All Killer, No Filler, which spawned the hit Fat Lip.

He married fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne in 2006, but the couple divorced in 2010.
