Father of slain man furious after repeat offender implicated in recent shooting

The father of a 22-year-old man who was shot to death outside of Canada’s Wonderland in 2003 is furious after learning one of the men once accused in his son’s killing is the suspect in a recent attempted murder.

Sirvon Edwards, 31, of Markham was arrested in New Brunswick on Monday in connection to a shooting outside a pub at Yonge Street and Clark Avenue West in Thornhill on May 8.

Edwards, who will be transported back to Ontario to face charges on Thursday, is no stranger to trouble.

He was one of two men charged with first-degree-murder in the shooting death of Jessie Lamonday outside Wonderland.

Lamonday’s father was despondent when he heard Edwards was once again facing serious charges.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Marcel Lamonday. “This guy should have been put away a long time ago. Police are doing their part trying to put this man away, and the justice system is not doing its part.”

Lamonday alleged his son was killed over a petty drug debt.

“My son died for $10. Because he owed…$10 on some weed.”

The murder charge was dropped in 2004 when Edwards agreed to plead guilty to weapons offences instead. He served a one-year sentence.

Shortly after his release, he was accused of a violent robbery in downtown Toronto.

Police allege he fired a shot at an officer while being pursued by police after a hold-up at Yonge and King in 2005.

“The suspect turned, looked at the officer and fired a shot at him,” Const. David Hopkinson told CityNews. “Fortunately the officer was not shot, or hurt.”

Edwards was charged with attempted murder. That charge was dropped, but he was convicted for the robbery.

Police are hopeful the latest charges will stick.

“It’s outrageous. it’s unacceptable so we used all of our resources available to find this person and to charge him and now he’s going to have to face justice,” said Sgt. Clint Whitney.
