Committee approves bike lanes project on Richmond & Adelaide

Toronto is one step closer to seeing more bike lanes in the downtown core.

The public works and infrastructure committee approved Wednesday a pilot project that would see separated bike lanes installed on Richmond Street West and Adelaide Street.

On Richmond, the lanes would go from Bathurst Street to York Street and on Adelaide from Bathurst to Simcoe Street.

The lanes would be installed this summer and cost nearly $400,000.

The pilot, which still needs council’s approval, is being done so the city can see its effect on traffic and the environment.

If it goes well the lanes could be extended, so they would run between Bathurst and Sherbourne.

Committee members were also considering whether to put a bike lane on Simcoe, from Front Street to Queen Street West, and on Peter Street from King Street West to Queen.

The staff report proposes a combination of regular bike lanes that would be painted on the roads or a barrier that would separate cyclists from vehicles (cycle-tracks).

However, the report warns the bike lanes will result in “some traffic capacity reductions along these corridors.”

The new lanes would still have to be approved by city council.
