Fire breaks out at Brampton propane facility

Crews remain on scene after a two-alarm fire broke out at a propane filing facility in the Steeles Avenue and Dixie Road area of Brampton.
Those living in the area say they heard an explosion around 9:30 p.m. after a fire broke out at the Air Liquide, a french multinational company which supplies industrial gases and services to various industries including medical, chemical and electronic manufacturers.
Const. Fiona Thivierge said the explosion were caused by several small propane tanks located outside the facility.
“Because the fire took place outside at the rear of a propane company a few of the propane tanks exploded, smaller tanks, 33 pound tanks exploded and that was what a lot of our residents and citizens saw – fireballs being sent into the air,” she explained.
Thivierge said there are some larger tanks located on the property so as a precaution Steeles will remain closed until the fire is completely out.
Train traffic has also been stopped on the CN Rail tracks located next to the facility as police say they are concerned about debris from the tank explosions. Police have also closed all of the local businesses surrounding the facility.
Brampton mayor Susan Fennell tells CityNews one employee at the propane facility suffered minor injuries. She has asked that people stay away from the location.
Thivierge says the fire has been contained and that crews continue to work to extinguish the fire.
