Toronto farmers markets selling Ontario wines this weekend

Two Toronto farmers markets are selling local wines alongside local foods this weekend, as part of a bid to promote Ontario wine growers.

Wineries have set up booths at the Evergreen Brick Works and St. Lawrence north market Saturday.

Wychwood Barns will begin offering wines later this month.

Farmers markets can now offer Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) wines, made from Ontario-grown grapes, under a two-year pilot program announced by Premier Kathleen Wynne last December.

But it may take some time to work out the kinks in this pilot project for smaller farmers markets.

“It’s not as simple as, all farmers markets can sell wine now and stalls start popping up at your local,” Carolyn Wong from the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market told CityNews in an email.

For now the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market will focus on food, says Wong. The modest-sized market has already reached its capacity for vendors this season.

And though it’s a great idea, says Wong, she doesn’t anticipate seeing a wide range of wineries at each farmers market.

“We’re farmers markets, not wine stores.”

The Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market runs every Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. starting May 6. Click here for more information on the market.
