CN Tower being lit green in Flaherty’s honour

The CN Tower will be lit green on Friday evening to honour the late Jim Flaherty who died suddenly a day earlier.

The former federal finance minister, who represented the Whitby-Oshawa riding, died at his Ottawa condo early Thursday afternoon. He was 64 and had only resigned from his position on March 18 to enter the private sector.

Earlier on Friday, MPs paid a special tribute at the House of Commons to Flaherty, one of Canada’s longest-serving finance ministers, for his public service. Before entering federal politics he served at Queen’s Park in the Harris government and rose to deputy premier.

A CN Tower spokeswoman the lights will be turned on at sunset (7:55 p.m.) and become more visible as the skies darken. Flaherty was known for wearing green ties, particularly on special occasions, as a nod to his Irish heritage.

The landmark is lit up on many special occasions. Last July, it was lit solid blue on the evening Prince George was born and lit blue when the Toronto Maple Leafs were in the playoffs last spring. It also glowed NDP orange after Jack Layton’s funeral in August 2011.
