Kathleen Wynne shuffles cabinet

Two new ministers have joined Premier Kathleen Wynne’s cabinet after a shuffle at Queen’s Park.

Bill Mauro, MPP for Thunder Bay-Atikokan, and Kevin Flynn, MPP for Oakville, were sworn in on Tuesday.

Mauro will become the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and Flynn will take over the role as Minister of Labour.

“Since 2006 Bill and Kevin have been strong members of our team,” said Wynne. “I looked at the team and I made decisions based on the capacity of people to do the job. I’m very proud of the makeup of cabinet.”

The premier has announced that Madeleine Meilleur is the new attorney general, making her the first francophone to hold the title. She will also retain her role as minister responsible for francophone affairs.

“Madeleine Meilleur is a hard working, smart woman who will be a wonderful attorney general,” explained Wynne.

Yasir Naqvi will become the minister of community safety and correctional services and John Gerretsen will take on the role of chair of cabinet.

“John Gerretsen has been a very strong voice and has brought wise council to the table and so I wanted to keep him at the table,” said Wynne.

Gerretsen informed Wynne in October he would not be running for re-election in the next general election.

The shuffle comes after municipal affairs and housing minister Linda Jeffrey announced she was leaving provincial politics to run for mayor of Brampton.

“Linda has been a very strong voice at the cabinet table as a member of caucus,” said Wynne. “I will personally miss Linda. She’s a woman of honesty and integrity.”
