More Project Brazen 2 documents released

An Ontario judge has released more documents from Project Brazen 2 —  the police investigation into Mayor Rob Ford and his friend, Sandro Lisi.

The new documents came out on Friday but were released to the media on Monday.

Police who have been investigating the mayor recently retrieved 10 gigabytes of data from Lisi’s phone focusing on photographs, videos and audio recordings taken, sent or received after Feb. 16, 2013. The data also included phone logs and the contents of his address book.

“They’re looking to further the investigation into the extortion charges against Mr. Lisi,” explained media lawyer Peter Jacobsen. “What is significant is that they’re looking at it very closely and the investigation is going on with some rigor.”

The document also showed that detectives flew from Toronto to California to hand deliver Lisi’s iPhone to Apple to try to retrieve data from his phone.

Lisi, Ford’s friend and former driver, is at the centre of the scandal surrounding the mayor and is currently facing fraud and extortion charges.

Police think Lisi’s phone could hold answers and evidence, including the identity of others who may have been involved in trying to retrieve the now infamous video of Ford allegedly smoking crack cocaine.

According to the document Ford staffers told police Ford exhibited bad behaviour during work hours and personal time. Staffers said the bad behaviour included substance abuse, drinking and driving, physical altercations with staff members.

On Wednesday another portion of a police document was released which included a police description of the video.

Media lawyer Peter Jacobsen read from the document outside a Toronto courthouse after the information was unsealed.

“At one point Mayor Ford holds the glass cylinder to his mouth, lights the lighter and applies the flame to the tip of the glass cylinder in a circular motion,” he said. “After several seconds Mayor Ford appears to inhale the vapours which is produced and exhaled the vapours.”

The court agreed to release search warrants from Jan. 14 and March 14, with some exceptions. Certain paragraphs have been kept private.

Those paragraphs were redacted at the request of lawyers for Lisi. Lisi and a co-accused are facing drug charges.

Media lawyers had argued for access to the search warrant information. Lawyers will be back in court on March 28 to argue for the release of those paragraphs.
