NDP social activist Joe Cressy wants to replace Chow

Joe Cressy wants to replace Olivia Chow as MP of the downtown riding, Trinity-Spadina.

Chow, a former Toronto school trustee and city councillor, resigned her federal MP position last week when she entered the Toronto mayoral race. The prime minister has until before the fall to call a byelection in Trinity-Spadina, which was Liberal red in 2006.

Before seeking the NDP nomination, Cressy, 29, played a vital role in Chow’s mayoral campaign and ran her federal campaign in 2011. He was also the former campaign manager in 2010 for Chow’s stepson Mike Layton, who is a Toronto councillor.

Cressy has deep roots in the local NDP community having served as president of the Trinity-Spadina federal NDP riding association for the past three years and sits on the NDP Federal Council.

“This is not a decision that I take lightly, but it is one I take on wholeheartedly and with great enthusiasm,” Cressy said in a release on Monday. “I hope to bring my experience, energy, and new ideas to the riding, and I can’t wait to get out in the community and start campaigning.”

Cressy has stepped down as president of the Trinity-Spadina federal NDP riding association and taken an unpaid leave of absence from the Stephen Lewis Foundation to pursue the nomination.
