March Break: Ideas for having a fun and cheap staycation week

If you’re planning on staying at home with the kids this March Break, you’re going to want to plan a few special activities to keep the week fun and interesting for all of you – without breaking the bank!

To help you get started with your scheduling, we’ve put together five staycation ideas to do with your kids:

• Visit a museum, zoo, or science centre: With the perfect mix of learning and fun, museums, zoos and science centres are always a great place to go with the kids. Many of these places often have special March Break programming, too, so you’re bound to find some extra activities to add to the fun. Your public library will likely have free events during the week, too!

• Have a foreign-inspired picnic: Get a globe or a map and have your child close their eyes and pick a place! Wherever their finger lands, have a picnic with food that’s inspired from that country or area of the world. You can go a couple of steps further by bringing some music from the country of choice, and some fun facts about the nation, too! (If it’s too cold for a picnic outdoors, you can always do this on a blanket on the living room floor!)

• Set up a scavenger hunt: Send your kids (and their friends!) out on an adventure with a classic scavenger hunt. Create a list of things, people or places for the kids to find – you can find lists online, or make one up of your own. Then, set them loose (with parental supervision, if necessary) to find the items on their list. Be sure to have a prize for the winner, and a consolation prize for the other players.

• Go for a nature hike: Spend some time in the great outdoors, whether it’s at a provincial park or just a forest nearby. Make a day trip of it and pack a lunch and snacks, and don’t forget to bring lots of water and sunscreen, too! You’ll love getting to spend some time as a family away from computers and TVs.

• Camp in your own backyard: You don’t have to go far into the wilderness just to pitch a tent! Stake out a section of grass in the backyard and set up camp for your family to spend a fun night outside together, with ghost stories, s’mores and all of your favourite camp activities.
