Campaign grows to have Gilmore Junio as Canada’s closing ceremony flag-bearer

The Canadian speedskater who won a silver medal in the 1,000-metre event on Wednesday has started a Twitter campaign to have his teammate named Canada’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Gilmore Junio gave up his spot so that Denny Morrison could compete in the final, and win silver.

Jonathon Gatehouse, who is in Sochi covering the Winter Games for Maclean’s magazine, told 680News the campaign is gaining momentum.

“I think everybody believes he’d be a very deserving flag-bearer,” Gatehouse said.

“Traditionally, that honour for the closing ceremony goes to the best performer in the Games, but you know, this might be one of those times that they’ll change the rules a little bit. I think certainly all of Canada would appreciate it if they would.”

Morrison salutes Gilmore as a shining example of Canadian and Olympic pride, and is promoting the hashtag, “Gilforflagbearer.”

Morrison will compete in the men’s 1,500-metre skate on Saturday.
