Arrest made in murder of Canadian couple in Mexico, media reports say

An arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a Canadian couple in Mexico, media reports say.

Nina Discombe, 72, and Edward Kular, 84, were found dead in their home on Sunday after an apparent break-in.

Mexican authorities said the couple was found by their gardener in a pool of blood in the living room of the house where they’d lived for at least six months.

Chapala city spokesman Roberto Arroyo said robbery is the main motive behind the Sunday attack on the pair. Some belongings were stolen, including a TV and an SUV.

He said the man was beaten on the head with a small statue and the woman was stabbed in the stomach with a kitchen knife.

“We’re all pretty much still in shock, can’t believe that it happened. It’s like a nightmare, a bad nightmare,” said the daughter-in-law, who identified herself only as Christine.

Rick Standing, president of the Canadian Club of Lake Chapala, said he met with the Attorney General for the state in Mexico who informed him that authorities believe they know who the perpetrator is and that they hope to make an arrest shortly.

He said the attack has shaken the affluent retirement community popular with snowbirds.

“This is an area of about 100,000 people with probably crime rates that are very low compared to major cities in the U.S. or Canada,” said Standing. “When something like this happens it’s a shock to all of us.”

“My friend is dead. She was very respected in the community and was an extraordinary author. She had just bought a house here to live in full-time,” said Barbara Wills.

The local Canadian club said the couple would often join in on organized activities.
