A section of Bayview Avenue will likely be shut down for several days after a burst water main flooded basements and created a large sinkhole in the middle of the roadway on Sunday.

City officials say Bayview has been closed in both directions from Finch Avenue to Holmes Avenue. As well Finch will be restricted to two lanes of eastbound traffic and one lane of traffic in the westbound direction approaching Bayview.

Ramin, a local resident, told CityNews he heard the sound at about 6:30 a.m. and woke his wife.

“We both woke up, came downstairs … there was water coming in around the front door. There was about three feet of water coming down the steps outside.”

Muddy water streamed through the basement and first floor of Ramin’s home, soaking his Persian carpets and coating his television, DVD player, and walls in filth.

Power in the area has since been shut off, forcing he and his wife to book a hotel for Sunday night.

He is not yet sure what the cost of the damage will be.

“What are we gonna do? We can’t do anything,” said Ramin.

TTC service on the 39 Finch route was diverted for several hours due to the intersection closure but full service has since returned.

It is not known yet when Bayview will be fully open to traffic.
