Today on the Hill: procurement, policy alternatives and a little football

By Terry Pedwell, The Canadian Press

OTTAWA – A pair of federal cabinet ministers will outline how the Conservative government plans to fix the way it buys new military equipment.

After years of bad-news stories about failed or delayed efforts to secure new fighter jets, military trucks and ships, Public Works Minister Diane Finley and Defence Minister Rob Nicholson will tell the Economic Club of Canada how they plan to fix the system.

Also today on and around Parliament Hill:

— The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives will release its 2014 alternative federal budget, with less than a week before Finance Minister Jim Flaherty delivers the real one in the House of Commons;

— New Democrat MPs Peggy Nash and Guy Caron will present their party’s budget priorities, the centrepiece being “making life more affordable for Canadians”;

— Industry Minister James Moore has a news conference scheduled to talk about the government’s latest plans for Canada’s wireless industry;

— Representatives of the International Youth Internships Program to talk about whether or not the Foreign Affairs department will make cuts to — or renew — their program;

— New Democrat MP Mathieu Ravignat will present a petition that calls on the government to keep its hands off the health care plans of public servants;

— And the Canadian Football League will present the Annis Stukus Trophy to the Canadian Football League’s 2013 coach of the year.
