Sloppy conditions across GTA as snow continues to fall

The Monday morning commute was slow and sloppy as snow continued to fall across the GTA.

The CAA of South Central Ontario said that as of mid-morning there were about 2,000 calls for service, and GO Transit reported delays of up to 70 minutes on some of its buses.

Air Canada has issued a travel alert for Toronto due to strong wind conditions, saying flights may be impacted and there could be subsequent air traffic control restrictions. There were almost 30 cancellations at Pearson International Airport on Monday morning.

Porter Airlines has also issued a weather advisory for Billy Bishop Airport.

School buses were cancelled, schools were closed and exams were postponed across Ontario. Click here to see the full list of cancellations and closures.

Environment Canada has issued a windchill warning for much of southern, central and eastern Ontario, including Toronto, the GTA, Hamilton and Barrie.

It extends from Windsor in the southwest, north to Muskoka, and east to Ottawa and Cornwall. Click here to see which areas are affected.

The weather agency says in the wake of a cold front, falling temperatures and strong winds will make it feel like the -30s Monday night and likely persist into Tuesday for most these areas.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto, Halton, Peel, York, Durham, Niagara and Hamilton warning of blowing snow. Reduced visibility on the roads could last until Tuesday.

It’s all due to an Alberta clipper that is affecting much of southern Ontario. With the passage of a cold front, associated with this weather system, winds will increase and blowing snow will be an issue. Snow squalls are expected to develop in the northwest flow off of Lake Huron and possibly Georgian Bay in the early morning, and will continue Monday.

In Toronto, there’s a high of -5 C in the forecast, but the temperatures will plummet on Monday afternoon due to gusty winds out of the northwest, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said.

Monday’s low is -19 C, with the wind chill making it feel like -32 C.
