Old Don Jail to get new city park

Toronto is getting a new city park on the grounds of the old Don Jail in Riverdale.

The new park will be created in the forecourt of the 150-year-old institution, which closed last spring. Bridgepoint Health has now taken over the property at the corner of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East.

“All elements are in place for the new park to move ahead. It will be constructed by PCL and turned over to the City,” a note by the parks and recreation committee said Thursday.

Coun. Paula Fletcher, who represents the ward, and Bridgepoint weren’t immediately available for comment.

The committee said the park will be incorporated into a significant heritage site home to not only the old Don Jail, but also the Governors and Gatekeepers house associated with the jail and a heritage Carnegie Library.

It will also connect naturally to the green space on the two other city properties at the corner, the Toronto Public Library Riverdale Branch and Emily’s House.
