Book City’s flagship Annex store to close this spring

Bibliophiles will have one fewer location to peruse after Book City announced on its Twitter account Thursday that it will be closing its flagship Annex store in the spring after almost 40 years.

The family-run book store, at 501 Bloor West, has been open for business since 1976.

Its other three locations — on the Danforth, Queen Street East, and Yonge and St. Clair — will remain open.

“Our Annex location is closing this spring, Stop by soon for amazing deals. Thank you to all our great Annex neighbours and customers!” the store tweeted.

Last April the flagship Nicholas Hoare shop, which opened in 1989 just west of Church Street on Front, also closed its doors.

It joined a growing list of indie bookstores that have gone out of business in recent years, including the Toronto Women’s Bookstore, which closed in November; The Book Mark on Bloor Street West, which closed in January and Pages on Queen Street West, which closed in 2009.
