Travel disrupted by icy roads, fog across the GTA

Temperatures rose on Saturday with rain and drizzle, and with the wet and warm conditions came perilous roads.

Fog, floods, and ice were the major concerns, as the layer of snow and ice that already coated the city gave way to warmer temperatures and rain, forcing road closures and transit disruptions.

Approximately 8.5 per cent of flights into and out of Pearson Airport were cancelled.

Air Canada waived the rebooking fee for passengers on affected flights at Pearson and Billy Bishop airports because of delays due to low ceilings, fog, and reduced visibility.

The TTC had to suspend or alter service on four bus routes due to icy road conditions, but service has since resumed.

Halton police shut down parts of Steeles Avenue and Sideroad Five after multiple collisions were reported. Those roads have since reopened.

York region saw similar problems, prompting police to urge drivers to slow down.

All northbound lanes of the Highway 400 were closed near Major Mackenzie after a tractor-trailer rollover. When lanes reopened just before 11 a.m., conditions were still foggy.

 

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is warning that with the rain, along with melting snow and ice, water levels could be higher than normal. Slippery and unstable conditions along waterways could also pose a hazard.

“The big danger right now is the hazardous conditions right near rivers and stream, especially in Toronto’s parks, many of which are in river and stream valleys,” Ryan Ness of the TRCA explained. “The important thing for people to know is that the ice is not safe right now, it will not hold your weight. The water flowing underneath it is very cold.”
