A male is in hospital after fire broke out at an apartment in the O’Connor Drive and Victoria Park Avenue area Wednesday evening.

Police say emergency crews were called to a first floor unit at 5 Wakunda Place around 10 p.m.

The male was found on the floor of the unit without vital signs and was revived by paramedics on the way to hospital.

He was taken to hospital with burns to his legs and suffering from smoke inhalation. Police say he used a wheelchair or possibly an electric scooter.

No other injuries have been reported.

Tenants of the building were forced to leave and were placed on TTC buses to stay warm.

There has been no word on what caused the fire.

Meanwhile, family members made it out safely after a neighbour alerted them to a fire in their east-end home.

It happened on Zaph Avenue, near Ellesmere and Meadowvale roads, around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

There’s no word on the cause of the blaze but there’s extensive damage to the house and to the two cars in the garage.
