Province begins distributing ice storm food vouchers outside Toronto

The Ontario government will begin compensating those who live outside Toronto for food lost during last month’s brutal ice storm and power outage.

The province is planning to hand out $450,000 in grocery store cards beginning on Tuesday.

Like in Toronto, the cards are intended for those who are in financial need and cannot afford to replace the food that was lost.  Residents must have been without power for more than 48 hours.

Eligible families can receive one $100 grocery card per household or eligible individuals can receive one $50 grocery card per person.

The vouchers are available in Dufferin County, Durham Region (beginning Thursday), Halton Region, Hamilton, Northumberland County (beginning Wednesday), Peel Region, Waterloo Region, Wellington County and York Region.

In Durham Region, residents need to apply for the cards by calling 1-888-721-0622. There are almost 2,000 cards available.

In Peel Region, the distribution of grocery gift cards continues through a call-in system, which will be active until Friday. The number to call is 905-791-7800.

The province said that to date, $842,600 in food grocery cards have been distributed, helping over 8,500 families and individuals.
