Maple Leafs plan statue outside ACC

The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t taken home hardware in decades, but the team might build some hardware of its own.

Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment is planning to build a statue outside the Air Canada Centre honouring the team’s history, reports the Toronto Sun.

Sources say the statue will feature five different Maple Leafs—potentially including coaches, managers, and even legendary Leafs broadcaster Foster Hewitt—sitting or standing on a bench. Which former Maple Leafs will get the statue treatment hasn’t been revealed, but the design leaves room for additional figures to be added.

Though ideas for a statue have been around since the ACC opened in 1999, new MLSE CEO Tim Leiweke is reportedly eager to move the project forward.

MLSE has applied for a permit to build the structure in Maple Leaf Square, at York Street and Bremner Boulevard.

Details about the size and material for the statue or when it will be unveiled are not yet known.

Which former Leafs should be part of the statue? Tell us in the comments.
