Loblaw to donate gift cards to ice storm victims

Loblaw Companies Limited has donated $25,000 in gift cards to help people who lost food after ice storm-related power outages, Premier Kathleen Wynne told reporters Sunday.

“The compensation I was most concerned about is food … that’s why we’re working with the private sector and private retailers,” said Wynne.

She hopes the province can match the amount and “challenged” other retailers to make similar donations.

The province’s office of Fire Marshall and Emergency Management is working on the distribution details.

Priority will be given to people who cannot afford to replace spoiled food.

Extra food will also be available through the Daily Bread Food Bank.

“Really it is the food compensation that we’re most concerned about,” said Wynne. “And food compensation that is the most quantifiable and easy to deal with.”
