A 61-year-old man is dead after a fire in a Beaches apartment building, police confirm.

The fire occurred in the Queen Street East and Glen Manor Drive area around 7:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.

Division commander Robert O’Hallarn said the fire started in the kitchen of a fourth-floor unit and there was a lot of combustible material nearby.

He said there were working smoke alarms in the building and the fire did not appear to be weather-related.

Crews had evacuated the building, but residents were allowed back into their homes before 10 a.m.

The coroner and fire marshal have been called in to investigate.

It was the second fatal fire in Toronto on Wednesday. Around 2:30 a.m., another man was killed in a car fire near Kingston Road and Midland Avenue in Scarborough.
