Subway train did not come off the tracks: TTC

The TTC is investigating a service disruption on the Bloor-Danforth line Wednesday morning.

Transit spokesperson Danny Nicholson told 680News contrary to earlier reports, a subway train did not go off the tracks outside Kipling station.

However, he was not able to provide an explanation as to why the initial report was made.

“I’m assuming that one of the first responders from the TTC may have thought that the train had derailed, when in fact it did not,” Nicholson said.

“As the train was going over a switch, there was some sort of a problem. We’re still looking into it. We don’t know the cause of that yet, but the train had to be reversed, and as it was being reversed, the train basically got caught in the switch.”

“When the TTC staff attended at first, they thought the train may have derailed. So our first priority was to put in place our evacuation procedures,” Nicholson added.

The train was evacuated as a precaution. There were 60 people on board at the time. No injuries were reported.

Nicholson also said weather may have played a role.

“Sometimes our switches can ice up, so that’s something that would definitely be looked into,” he said.

Nicholson said the station was dealing with signal problems prior to the incident, which halted service between Kipling and Islington stations. Service has since resumed.

Wednesday’s transit issue was the latest in a series of problems this week. On Monday, TTC riders faces two subway service disruptions — one on the Yonge line and the other on the Bloor-Danforth line.
