A Mississauga couple who reported their Christmas gifts were stolen – including an iPad for their son who has Down’s syndrome – have been charged with public mischief.

Peel police allege they fabricated the theft.

The couple told CityNews that they were driving home from the mall on Saturday evening when a sheet of ice smashed their back window, causing their purchases to fly out of the vehicle.

The news prompted an outpouring of public support from CityNews viewers, some of whom wanted to help replace the gifts or repair the damage to the vehicle.

The couple also told police about the incident. Police say that during interviews with the officers, the man confessed to making up the entire incident.

Police say he admitted to fabricating the theft as well as how the damage occurred.

Police arrested Christopher Garcia-Jones, 37, and Frances Maila Fajardo, 47. They are free on bail and will appear in court on Jan. 21.
