Police shoot man at Queen subway station, SIU investigating

A man who witnesses say was waving a gun around while riding the subway on Friday night is now in hospital after he was shot by police at Queen station.

The victim, described by EMS as a white male in his early 20s, was rushed to a local trauma centre in critical condition. His condition has recently been upgraded to stable.

It’s not yet clear if the shooting occurred on the subway, or on the subway platform.

The Special Investigations Unit has taken over the case.

“Police were investigating a man on a subway car. There was an interaction between the man and the police. The man was subsequently taken to hospital with gunshot wounds,” The SIU said in a release.

Witnesses described a scene of panic as riders scrambled to get off the subway and out of the station at around 8 p.m.

One man told CityNews he was riding on the same subway as the man.

“He didn’t make any threats,” the witness said. “He was just kind of pacing to himself. And he had a black gun.”

The TTC halted subway service between Union and Bloor subway stations on the Yonge line.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency which investigates cases involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
