Large snowstorm set to hit Toronto & GTA Saturday; warnings issued

A winter storm warning has been issued for Oakville, Burlington and Hamilton for Saturday as a large storm system bears down on Toronto and most of southern Ontario.

When all is said and done, between eight and 15 centimetres of snow is expected to fall in Toronto on Saturday and Sunday.

Significantly higher amounts are expected for the areas west of Toronto.

“Get the shovels out and some people may want to get the snow-blower ready,” said CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles.

“The cold air is in place, the big question is how much moisture will this system feed into the area. The lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario will get it stacking up.”

Environment Canada upgraded the winter storm watch to a warning Friday afternoon. Oakville, Burlington and Hamilton could get as much as 25 centimetres of snow, the national forecaster said.

“Strong and gusty easterly winds will develop ahead of this system with reduced visibilities in snow and blowing…motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions,” Environment Canada said.

A special weather statement for Saturday remains in effect for Toronto and the GTA.
