Red Cross personal support workers to strike Wednesday

More than 4,500 unionized personal support workers, including about 900 in the GTA, are walking off the job on Wednesday morning.

Many of them will march from Toronto’s City Hall to Queen’s Park after union members did not ratify an agreement between Red Cross Care Partners and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

It’s expected that about 50,000 patients across the province will be affected.

The employees, who make $15 an hour on average, provide in-home care for the elderly, people with physical challenges and for those recovering from surgery.

The union representing the workers says wages and travelling costs are the big issues. The group has been in a legal strike position for several weeks and has been without a contract since April.
