Doug Ford defends brother on latest allegations

Mayor Rob Ford stayed mum about the latest police allegations, but his older brother Coun. Doug Ford came to his defence on Friday, saying he hasn’t done heroin while in office and is not mingling with alleged gang members.

A publication ban on the wiretap portion of a police document was lifted by Ontario Superior Court Justice Ian Nordheimer on Wednesday.

The wiretaps indicated an officer believed he intercepted a conversation where the mayor offered to buy the infamous crack video for $5,000 and a car. Police also heard Ford had his phone stolen or lost at a Windsor Road crack house and that his friend, accused drug dealer Alexander Lisi, was trying to get it back.

“You’re beating a dead horse here. The mayor has not been charged,” Doug Ford told reporters on Friday. “Let me assure everyone the mayor’s not hanging out with gang members.”

He said the mayor was focused on his work and doing “everything he can” to make sure the 2014 capital and operating budgets fall in line.

Ford also said he and the mayor had faith in front-line police officers and the judicial system.

“They tried to take Rob down three times and they failed,” he said, referring to the court cases brought against the mayor, including a conflict of interest case that accused him of using city resources for his private football charity. “Now they’re trying a fourth time to take him down. And they’re going to fail again.”
