3 hurt after bus carrying Markham hockey team crashes near Kitchener

A hockey dad is being hailed a hero after jumping behind the steering wheel of an out-of-control bus filled with minor hockey players from Markham early Friday morning.

The bus crashed into a roadside barrier on Highway 401 near Drumbo, southwest of Kitchener at around 9 a.m., sending two players and a parent to hospital with minor injuries.

But players on the bus said it could have been much worse if the dad didn’t leap into action after the driver fell out of his seat while barrelling down the highway.

“(The dad) was about five seats back. He saw what was happening and he ran up and steadied the wheel which kind of guided us and luckily we didn’t go into oncoming traffic,” player Matt Empringham told CityNews.

“People were flying all over the place.”

The bus was carrying the Markham Majors hockey team to a tournament in Ohio.

After a delay that lasted several hours the team decided to board another bus and continue on with their roadtrip. One of the injured had to stay behind.

The OPP say charges may be laid against the bus driver.
