Statue stolen from downtown church

Police are looking for help finding a statue which was stolen from a church near Kensington Market on the weekend.

The bronze-coloured Jesus the Panhandler statue went missing from the Church of Saint Stephen-in-the-Fields on Saturday before 4:20 p.m. It usually sits at the northwest corner of the church, in the College and Bathurst area.

“We know how much this statue meant to many people, and we’re still hopeful that good may come out of this somehow,” the church said on its website.

“We continue to encourage whoever took it to return it unharmed.”

The statue was loaned to the church by artist Timothy Schmalz.
