3 suspects sought in Rexdale community centre murder

Police have released photos of three people believed to be responsible for the murder of a 25-year-old man in Rexdale last week.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Det. Sgt. Brian Borg said within minutes of arriving at the North Kipling Community Centre on Nov. 24, Neeko Mitchell was shot several times with “high-velocity ammunition.”

He was killed outside the front doors of the centre, where he had gone to watch his brother play in a basketball tournament.

“He never had any chance of survival,” Borg said. “We are very fortunate that no one else was shot.”

Police have been reviewing surveillance video from the building and said a man and toddler were standing within feet of the shooting.

Detectives saw nothing before that would have set it off, but Borg said there was “no doubt” Mitchell was the intended target.

Police are looking at whether the murder may be related to gangs or a turf war but have yet to identify the suspects captured by surveillance cameras.

“He was killed for a reason that we’re not aware of,” Borg said.

Although there were lots of people at the centre that evening, police said very few have come forward with information, possibly out of fear of retaliation.

They are appealing to any witnesses to call them at (416) 808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 808-TIPS (8477).
