Sen. Duffy undergoes open-heart surgery

OTTAWA – Senator Mike Duffy is in hospital after undergoing open-heart surgery on Tuesday.

The chief of the cardiac unit at the University of Ottawa’s heart institute conducted the early morning procedure. He is the same doctor who treated Duffy for a similar problem back in 2006.

The former broadcaster also had a heart attack 21 years ago and in October he went on medical leave after suffering from angina while in Prince Edward Island.

The senator’s wife issued a statement Tuesday night saying the surgery went well and that he is now resting.

Duffy was one of three senators suspended without pay last month for their involvement in the expense scandal.

However, a section of the suspension motion allowed the senators to keep their medical benefits.

Duffy is currently under investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for his repayment of $90,000 in expenses which involved an alleged deal with the prime minister’s then chief of staff Nigel Wright. No charges have been laid.
