Toronto most youthful city in the world, beating out Berlin & New York

A new survey has named Toronto the most youthful city in the world, beating out Berlin and New York City – and we’re also the only Canadian city on the list.

YouthfulCities released the findings on Monday, ranking 25 cities around the world in 16 different categories.

“More than half of the world’s population is under 30 and more than half live in cities,” Robert Barnard, co-founder of YouthfulCities, said in a statement.

“It’s clear that cities will shape our world. And it is clear that the cities that will thrive and prosper are those that are able to attract and empower young people.”

Toronto placed in the top five of nine of the 16 categories, including youth employment, economic status, and diversity, but the city took a knock when it came to civic engagement: Toronto placed 23rd – out of a possible 25 spots.

Still, it was enough to be named the ‘Youthful City of the Year’ for 2014.

Berlin was named the second most youthful city in the world and New York City was No. 3.

“This venture is about building an unparalleled base of knowledge about the future of cities through the eyes of youth and at the same time amplifying the role youth play in building better cities to live work and play in,” Barnard said.

“We want to ensure that young people are the driving force for urban success across the world.”
