Tips for reducing the pain at the pump

While Canadians have little control over the price at the pumps there are things you can do to lessen the pain.

“Keeping your tires properly inflated you will use less fuel by reducing the rolling resistance on the road and this also improves the vehicles handling and extends the tire life,” said Silvana Aceto with the CAA.

“One of the easiest and most effective ways to conserve fuel is to change your driving style so avoid jack rabbit starts/stops, you can also try reducing your highway speed because fuel consumption begins to increase above 90 kilometres an hour.”

If you’re hauling everything but the kitchen sink in your trunk consider lessening the load, that extra weight eats up more gas.

“We also recommend that you clean out your trunk, any items that you’re not using like your golf clubs or maybe hockey equipment and what not, and as well try and avoid using the roof rack for every 45 kilograms of excess weight fuel consumption can increase by two percent,” Aceto explained.

While we’re paying $1.29,  it’s over a $1.31 in some parts of Ontario. The price per litre is about $1.35 in Montreal, $1.40 in the Northwest Territories, some of the cheapest gas in Canada is in Alberta, in Edmonton a litre will set you back  $1.08.

South of the border, the price per litre in Texas works out to about 76 cents and gas can be found as cheap as $3.52 per gallon in parts of Buffalo which converts to about 93 cents U.S. a litre.
