Mayor Ford bobbleheads on sale for charity

TORONTO – Bobbleheads of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford went on sale at the City Hall rotunda Tuesday morning.

They were incredibly popular – the first person in line arrived at 5 a.m. and by 1 p.m., staffers were telling people to leave the line, as demand far exceeded supply.

The $20 bobbleheads went for sale around 10:30 a.m. at the city hall rotunda, and portions of the proceeds were going to the city’s United Way Campaign. Only 1,000 bobbleheads are available.

Ford was there, signing and numbering every one.

Dawne and her husband Al are Ford supporters and they called it a proud moment.

“We’ve been waiting and it was worth it, absolutely,” Dawne said.

Meanwhile, a number of the bobbleheads are already available online in order to be resold.

Online resellers eBay, Craigslist and Kijiji all had postings Tuesday for the doll, with the eBay posting reaching a bid of $185 by 1 p.m.

One Kijiji listing was $500 while the other was $1,200. The Craigslist bobblehead was listed at $2000.

Due to popular demand, Ford said he has ordered more bobbleheads and told people in line that the dolls should arrive in three or four weeks. The Ford nation t-shirts will also be sold for $20 with proceeds to United Way.

Tuesday’s bobbleheads were apparently ordered before the Ford crack cocaine scandal that has rocked the city. On Oct. 31, Toronto police said they had retrieved the video reportedly showing the mayor smoking crack cocaine.

Ford broke his silence last Tuesday, saying he smoked crack cocaine about a year ago, but apologized and repeatedly said he’d remain in office.

The bobbleheads were first unveiled on Monday, with Ford’s office posting a photo on the mayor’s official Twitter account.

Reaction on Monday was mixed, with some saying the bobblehead looked more like Ford’s brother Doug, and others saying they were eager to get their hands on the toy.

Some reporters got their hands on the doll on Monday, with CityNews cameraman Alfredo Colangelo tweeting a photo of the bobblehead.

The mayor said he plans to sell signed ‘Ford Nation’ tee-shirts on Wednesday ahead of the council meeting in which his future will be debated.
