TORONTO- Twenty-five thousand runners from over 60 countries participated in Sunday’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
Over $3.2 million was raised for charity, and a few records were broken as well.
Lanni Marchant broke a 28-year Canadian record with a time of 2:28:00.
Marchant, a native of London, Ont., took home $28 000 for her record-breaking time.
She placed 44th at the women’s marathon at the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow in 2012.
But it was Kenya’s Flomena Cheyech who won the overall women’s category with a time of 2:25:13.
On the men’s side, Ethiopian Deressa Chimsa ran the 42.2 Km route in 2:07:05.
Meanwhile, a number of unique achievements were realized by Torontonians.
Paul Statchuck broke the Guinness World Record for fastest marathon dressed in full lacrosse gear with a time of 3:46:58. David Hiddleston broke the Guinness World Record for fastest half-marathon dressed as a fruit when he crossed the finish line in a banana costume at 1:25:45.
Rick Rayman successfully completed his 300th marathon when he crossed the finish line at the 14th edition of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
