Evacuees remain out of homes following derailment, fire in Gainford, Alta.

GAINFORD, Alta. – It will likely be sometime Tuesday before evacuees will be allowed to return to their homes in the village of Gainford, Alberta.

About 100 residents fled to safer ground early Saturday after a C-N freight hauling crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas derailed 80 kilometres east of Edmonton.

Thirteen tanker cars ran off the tracks causing two huge explosions and a massive fire that`s still burning.

C-N says a controlled burn is now being done on six tank cars containing liquefied petroleum gas.

Transportation Safety Board investigators will move in to determine the cause of the accident once the fire is out and the wreckage cools off.

Local residents say the explosions and fire were terrifying, but there were no injuries and no major property damage.
