SACRAMENTO, Cali.- Three Toronto elephants have arrived at the PAWS animal sanctuary near Sacramento Sunday afternoon.
Iringa, Thika and Toka arrived at Performing Animals Welfare Society Sanctuary just before 6 p.m. local time.
PAWS confirmed the arrival of Iringa, Toka and Thika in a tweet saying “WE MADE IT!!”
It took almost an hour to unload Thikia, who seemed a bit reluctant, from her crate.
The 4,500-kilometre journey began late Thursday evening after several delays.
The elephants were transported in crates on flatbed trucks. Their convoy crossed the U.S. border Friday morning.
City council voted in 2011 to send the three aging elephants to the sanctuary after animal rights advocates voiced concern for their welfare.
Once at PAWS sanctuary, the trio will join eight other elephants. Three of them are female African elephants named Maggie, Lulu and Mara.
