York Region has activated most of its red light cameras.
The cameras and equipment were installed over the summer, while testing took place in September.
The cameras are at 20 intersections scattered throughout the region. As of Friday, drivers running a red in any of those intersections can expect to get a ticket in the mail, under the Highway Traffic Act.
Regional officials say side impact collisions are among the leading causes of motor vehicle deaths and injuries.
Studies show the presence of red light cameras in other cities – such as Toronto – has resulted in fewer such crashes from drivers going through red lights.
