A body has been discovered inside an abandoned building that caught fire early Monday morning in the Bathurst and Dupont area.
“The fire was successfully extinguished by Toronto fire and contained. Through the course of a search within the address of the building a body was located,” Toronto Police Detective Robert Choe told 680News.
Fire officials initially said searchers found no one inside; however, the body was discovered several hours later during an investigation into the fire.
Police are working to identify the body.
“Right now we are in the midst of the identification process,” Choe said.
The fire began on the second floor around 5 a.m. where nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution and Bathurst was closed for the investigation.
Fire officials say it escalated into a two-alarm fire that was fought by 45 firefighters and 12 fire trucks.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate.
