Mirvish family celebrates 50 years of live theatre in Toronto

TORONTO, Ont. – This September marks the 50th anniversary of the Mirvish family presenting live theatre in Toronto, and they are unveiling their biggest season to date to celebrate.

Ed Mirvish first made his mark in Toronto in 1963 when he bought the Royal Alexandria Theatre.

Fast forward 50 years, and the 2013-2014 Mirvish season is presenting 18 shows with 500 artists. One of the highlights includes a surprise from Olympic skater Elvis Stojko, who will take the part of slick lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago.

“You may know me as an Olympic skater, but what you may not know about me is that I’m a big fan of musicals,” Stojko says in a promo.

Another highlight includes Afghan war veteran Cassidy Little from Newfoundland will perform in The Two Worlds of Charlie F. The cast includes medically discharged military personnel. Little, himself, lost his leg in Afghanistan in 2011, and uses humour in the performance to retell his story.

Meantime, Brian Henson – the son of Muppet creator Jim Henson – is bringing Puppet Up! Uncensored to the stage.

Mirvish has also announced casting news for several previously-run shows, including theatre veteran Brian Bedford playing the Pope in The Last Confession, a mystery thriller about the Vatican, while Green Day’s American Idiot, The Beatles’ tribute Rain, The Lion King and We Will Rock You will also be on the bill.
