TORONTO, Ont. – A construction worker is dead after falling from a new building under construction at Yonge and Gerrard, Friday afternoon.
Toronto Fire captain Mike Strapko said the man was working on the 70th floor of the Aura building, when he fell 55 floors (181 metres), landing on the 15th floor rooftop of the College Park building next door, about 24 metres away.
“Paramedics were called at about 12:35 and they assessed and treated a patient,” EMS spokeswoman Kim McKinnon told 680News. “It was a man who had fallen from a roof.”
“[Emergency crews] did their very best and they were very quickly, but they were unable to help this patient.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to CityNews, the lanyard on his safety harness broke.
Darren told 680News he was walking on the other side of the street near the building, when fire trucks and police cruisers arrived at the scene.
“People were coming across to see, and I just kept walking, but then my friend who lives here texted me and said ‘somebody fell off the 70th floor of the Aura’,” he said.
Construction is complete on front of the Aura building, but workers continue to build at the back of the structure.
The Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate, while a spokesperson says an inspector and an engineer have been sent to the site.
