Synagogue evicted from TDSB site after 3 decades

The Toronto District School Board has evicted a synagogue from Rockford School near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West, a space the synagogue has used rent free for over three decades.

TDSB Trustee Howard Kaplan says the school has been paying for the Shomer Israel Congregation’s hydro and land use, but feels that money could have been put to better use such as buying new textbooks.

The Shomer Israel Congregation said they have had an informal agreement with the TDSB to use the school’s portable free of charge.

The Congregation feels the TDSB has turned their backs on them and the predominately Jewish community in the neighbourhood.

Councillor James Pasternak, who represents the ward where the school is located, disagrees with the decision.

Pasternak says the city is looking to moving the portable just a few meters away on city property which the synagogue could use on weekends.

The synagogue was evicted on July 31.
