Island airport pedestrian tunnel to be completed mid-2014

TORONTO – Work continues on the pedestrian tunnel to Toronto’s island airport, with excavation now at the halfway point and the digging expected to be completed by the fall.

Construction started in March 2012 on the project, which is expected to be finished in the latter half of 2014.

“Reaching the half-way point of excavation marks an exciting milestone for the pedestrian tunnel project,” Geoffrey Wilson, president and CEO of the Toronto Port Authority, said in a statement.

“It makes the project’s progress very real and brings us one step closer to providing passengers with reliable, fast and efficient access to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.”

When completed, the 240-metre-long tunnel will have four moving sidewalks moving at 2.3 kilometres an hour, and it will take six minutes to get to the airport.
