Scotiabank marks 5th year as major sponsor for the Caribbean Carnival

TORONTO – This is the fifth year in a row that Scotiabank has been the major sponsor of the Caribbean Carnival.

As anyone who has travelled to the islands knows, Scotiabank has a huge presence in the Caribbean.

The lender operates in 22 countries, and actually had an office in downtown Kingston, Jamaica before they had one in downtown Toronto.

John Doig is Scotiabank’s Chief Marketing Officer, said the bank and the carnival are a great match.

“The very first year we had a request for staff volunteers. We needed about 60 and we got 600, so there has been an incredible connection with our staff and our customers on the parade route, Pan Alive, all of those events, many, many of our customers want to come out and participate,” Doig told 680News.

A lot of people still commonly refer to the festival as Caribana it’s more about the fun than the name.

“We don’t own the Caribana name and nor does the festival management committee so we’ve gone with Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival and this is our third year under that name and the attendance at the parade has gotten larger so were comfortable with the way it is,” Doig said.

The carnival is a boost to Toronto’s economy with the weekend events expected to bring in more than $400-million to the city.

Scotiabank was one of the sponsors of the original Caribana back in 1967.
