SIU probes fatal shooting on TTC streetcar

Officers investigate after a man was fatally shot during a dispute with police in Toronto on July 27, 2013

TORONTO – The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing a fatal shooting on a TTC streetcar early Saturday morning.

A man died in hospital after he was shot during a clash with police just after midnight at Dundas Street West and Bellwoods Avenue, west of Bathurst Street.

On Monday, the SIU identified the victim as Sammy Yatim, 18. He was identified by friends and family on Sunday.

A bystander told CityNews Yatim was armed with a knife and police ordered him to drop it while pointing their guns at him.

The witness — who did not want his name used — said officers fired several rounds and then started performing CPR.

He also said two people were taken to hospital in separate ambulances. No passengers were on the streetcar at the time of the shooting.

Yatim was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, but later died, the SIU says. A Taser was also used, the agency says.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

It investigates all cases involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

The SIU is also interviewing witnesses and reviewing the TTC’s and other surveillance video.

Anyone with video footage or information on this case is asked to contact the SIU’s lead investigator at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529 (ext. 1965).
