Toddler dies at unlicensed Vaughan daycare

VAUGHAN – A Toronto toddler died at an unlicensed home daycare in Vaughan.

Paramedics were called to the unlicensed daycare Monday and found a two-year-old without vital signs, according to York Region Public Health Services spokeswoman Colleen Gareau.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to revive the toddler were unsuccessful.

A cause of death is not yet known. An autopsy is scheduled within the next two days.

The daycare was unlicensed but could legally care for five children under the age of 10.

It was ordered shut down Tuesday.

Gareau says it failed a health inspection by York Region officials who found health hazards related to food safety and infection prevention and control.

She says the Ministry of Education has been notified and is conducting an investigation into whether the daycare was operating legally.

No charges have been laid in the case.
